WHY YOU SHOULD SEE THIS FILM
For starters, Pat Powell will be live in the cinema for this screening to sing you a song and also answer your questions during the Q&A. If you frequent any number of Sydney’s clubs and music venues, you may be familiar with Pat Powell as the hardworking and friendly vocalist who is always up for a post-performance chat. Maybe you’ve also seen him light up the Sydney Opera House out front of a 36-piece ska orchestra, or croon his way through a heartbreaking soul ballad as a member of the oft-seen Dancing In The Shadows Of Motown revue. You might also be familiar with his work in decades past with names like Margaret Ulrich, James Freud, Jenny Morris, Lisa Maxwell, Flotsam Jetsam, Caribbe, Club Ska and countless others. But do you know how Pat Powell ended up in Australia or what motivates the man beyond music? Born in the UK to Jamaican parents and experiencing police persecution on the streets of Bristol, as soon as he could Pat left the racism of Britain behind to tour Europe. Unexpectedly winding up Down Under during the ‘80s, he quickly discovered Australia had its own unresolved race issues, not least with its original inhabitants and First Nations custodians.
